Boukman est un roman historique. Il raconte la genèse de la révolution à Saint-Domingue, soit  la Cérémonie du Bois Caïman, prélude à treize années d’un combat qui s’est soldé par l’abolition de l’esclavage et la création de l’État d’Haïti.
